In witchcraft, everything you use has a purpose. Whether it's a meaning you've assigned to an object or ingredient, or a meaning that's generally/historically agreed upon, everything has a purpose in magic. While items to have their own meaning, there are some ingredients that are considered "all-purpose"-- meaning they can be used in general spells, as well as used to replace ingredients you don't have.
All-Purpose Herbs
Rosemary
Bay Leaves
Sage
Basil
Lavender
Cinnamon
These herbs have their own meaning and general uses. They're great for general spells, as well as a replacement for an ingredient you might be lacking in another spell. Aside from their general meanings, these herbs are also known to increase magic and power, thus making them a good addition to a spell when you're missing something.
All-Purpose Stones/Crystals
Clear quartz
Obsidian
Amethyst
Jasper
Bloodstone
These stones and crystals have their own meaning and general uses. Much like the herbs listed above, these stones can be a great addition to general spellwork as well as spells where you may be missing something. These stones promote strength and power, making them useful for increasing the power of a spell.
